Phil's Guide to Psy.D.
США
Добавлен 23 дек 2009
I'm a clinical psychology doctoral candidate finishing up my Psy.D degree. I was originally born in Accra, Ghana, and moved to the States with my family when I was young. I studied Neuroscience in my undergrad life at Indiana University. I then studied at Boston University, obtaining my master's in Health Sciences. My passions have always been reflected in his life as I served as a dental assistant, clinical informatics specialist, pharmaceutical assistant, and currently as a certified personal trainer/medical exercise specialist. My ultimate goal is to help people holistically through physical, emotional, and psychological evidence-based interventions.

How Important is Research for Applying to Grad School | Clinical Psychology
Congrats Phil! Much deserved. You’re almost there and have helped so many people pursue their dreams with an informed mind - myself included
Hey Phil! I am an incoming Clinical Mental Health Counseling student beginning studies this fall. I’m interested in clinical psychology but I have some questions about Clinical Psych programs and if it’s worth pursuing after I finish my masters and get some more experience. I guess my bigger question is - will getting my masters be a waste of time? I don’t have a counseling background or what I believe would be a strong enough professional background to get into a PhD program. If I did decide to pursue a clinical psychology doctoral program, would the counseling experience from my master’s program help strengthen my application? Thank you for the information you share on your channel!!
are there enough jobs for sports psychologist
Is organizational psychologist in demad in US? Like if I plan to do my masters in IO will it be beneficial for me (I'm an international student)
What are some examples of clinical experiences? When I think of that my mind goes to ABA behavioral technician work, Sheppards Pratt, maybe shadowing at some clinics? But I’m not entirely sure, what are some examples?
Yes shadowing, ABA, case managing, secretary or clerkship at a mental community, psychometrician, suicide hotline, drug and substance use helper, psychiatrist assistant, and so much more! If you need more ideas feel free to reach out to me on my website at philsarpong.com for a consult, best of luck!
Never stop making videos seriously
Appreciate that support!
Can you tell me what is your opinion about Germany ?
Not sure, I haven't heard or seen too much on programs in Germany sorry!
Thanks a ton for the link
No worries
Thanks a lot for sharing source
My pleasure
can you please help me find some good neuropsychology psyD programs, or clinical psychology programs with neuro tracks? i’m looking at Dallas and California
It really depends on what you're looking for in a program and what you envision using the degree for once your done. For specific help feel free to reach out on my website at philsarpong.com to connect for a consult!
Thank you for this breakdown, what do you guys think of BA in Human Services and minor in Psych.
Thanks Phil...I was aspiring to become an engineer but I figured out I wasn't interested in it. Got interested in psychology a month ago and I am still really interested in psychology, and clinical psychology as well, going to start my A levels in a couple of months, let's see how it works out 🙂 Thank you for your videos.
No problem, happy to hear best of luck!

Can a psychiatrist prescribe medication and also do therapy at the same sessions?
In the U.S. certain states allow psychologists to prescribe after additional certification and a masters program so yes after that training they could do both
@philsguidetopsyd yes, but I'm asking for the opposite. Can a psychiatrist also give talk therapy ?
@@Letstalk-zx7jx yes they can!
do really clinical psychologist with phd in private practice make 200k per year in california?
In private practice for therapists or psychologists clinicians can set their price to anything they want. Although keep in mind for private practice you have to find your own patients, do scheduling, billing, insurance, taxes, marketing, pay for overhead fees (if you rent space), pay employees, and pay for other expenses regarding private practice. So the range is quite large and depends on multiple different factors
@@philsguidetopsyd thanks for your answers
I have a question for you and I would be very grateful if you could help me. I have a bachelor's degree in psychology and I am studying for a master's degree in artificial intelligence and I really want to study a PhD in clinical psychology in America. Do you think it is possible for me to get admission with funding and what are the solutions for my chances? I have a good TOEFL score and I have not yet approved my research proposal and i can work in the field of using artificial intelligence in psychology. And in general, do you think neuroscience or clinical psychology is a better choice? Do clinical psychology with phd in us have the right to occupational therapy? And can you earn up to 100,000 dollars a year from these fields?thank you
In terms of admissions it might be helpful to reach out to programs about your application before you apply. Clinical psychologists can do therapy while neuroscientists do not do therapy. Salary ranges can be found on bls.gov and depend on area and specialty
I love your videos. I hope we can collab one day.
Id love too!! Please reach out at pkssarpong@gmail.com or i can send you an email!
I have a question if my population that I want to help is adolescents with mental illness what would you recommend?
Likely Clin Psych with the focus on child and adolescent population
Yeah a clinical/counseling degree with a focus or specialization in either pediatric or child intervention and treatment might be the way to go. There is also board certification in clinical psychology regarding that focus
I'm currently getting my masters in industrial / organizational Psych but i still want my PSy D. Do I have a chance ? i'm willing to take more clinical courses to get in . I plan to
If you are getting a masters in anything, it will automatically make you more competetive for PsyD/PhD programs so it sounds like your on the right path!
Your videos are so educational.
Thank you!
Currently in grad school for MHC Thank you so much this video is very helpful
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks a lot for this video and I have a question. Is there anything that can be done to compensate for a lack of research experience? I know in previous videos you have also emphasized the importance of clinical experience.
I think it depends on the school. I’m applying to Nova’s PsyD program and I heard they aren’t too big on research experience. Also, if you took research courses you can probably speak more about that and how it helped enhance your research skills and prepare you for grad school. That might help. That’s what I plan on doing
Applying to PsyD programs in school psychology myself, many programs look for willingness towards research. They will look for that research experience, but it is not the end all be all, especially in a PsyD program. However, many PsyD programs are very similar to a PhD, surprisingly. So, you have to know which program you're applying to. For instance, one program I'm applying to is a true PsyD with significant clinical experience, and another program is more of a PhD with a lot of research. If you can write a great personal statement expressing your desire to research, it will go a long way. You will be behind without that experience, but it is not entirely the “end all be ball.” Programs could never admit undergraduate students if they made extensive research a requirement.
@kylerwurzer3014 Appreciate the response, thank you.
Yes, agree with all that's been said! Getting strong LOR, a solid CV, good personal statement, and practicing on your interview skills will go a long ways for programs which are more holistic of applicants. If looking for additional research, attending conferences or looking to see if you can help doctoral students on their dissertation might be a great way to get some quick research experience to put on a CV. Asking around can go a long ways!
@@philsguidetopsyd Thanks a lot
Can Neuropsychologists legally use brain scanners ?
Typically no. MRI technicians and other techs have training in using the equipment. Typically its medical doctors who are trained to understand the imaging from those tests. Neuropsychologists only do paper/pencil tests or computer tests to assess for neurological disabilities like dementia, adhd, dyslexia, etc.
Hi for a PhD, the school I’m looking at requieres a psy gre??? I already have a general gre? But since I’m a MA in anthropology it was suggested I take the psy gre???
Some schools require that, yes you could ask the school if your general gre will suffice but they might require that you take the additional psy gre.
You rock thank you 🤘🏻
No problem!
neuropsychology , neuropsychiatrist both are same are there is any differences in that can you pls explain the similarities and difference between this two field
A neuropsychiatrist is someone who goes through med school, gets a residency in psychiatry and then specializes in neurology related diseases. While neurospsychology, students get a PhD/PsyD in clinical psychology, then do an internship, fellowship, and board certification in neuropsychology and do the testing for a number of neurological diagnoses. Neuropsychologists are not medical doctors, they cannot prescribe, they can only test individuals (using paper/pencil tests or computer tests) for diagnosis of disorders that range from ADHD, autism, Dyslexia, and Dementia or any other neurological disorder. Sometimes they might have some training in imaging but this is rare.
Your videos have me so helpful as a undergrad psych senior
Awesome, glad to know!
🕊
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thank you for this great explanation ! I just have a quick question please, does MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling means Both Clinical & Counseling psychology ? I would like to become a clinical psychologist, so do you recommend this program to me ? I will appreciate your help.
Not quite, a MA in clinical mental health is probably a masters that helps students sit for a masters licensure as a therapist whether LPC, LPCC, or LCC depending on the state. In other words its a masters to become a licensed professional counselor/therapist. While the clinical/counseling psychology masters typically is geared for future clinical and counseling psychologists in the Phd/PsyD level. This depends on the program so I would ask the schools specifically what their degree is for. If wanting to become a clinical psychologists you could look into APA accredited clinical psychology programs PhD or PsyD and if they are accredited there is a good chance they will have what you are looking for.
Great video very well explained ❤
Thank you!
You’re such a good person! Thanks for the encouragement. I haven’t officially applied yet but the thought of possibly not getting accepted bothers me very much
It's a tricky process! Reach out if you are looking for more help!
Is it easy to get scholarships in PsyD programs?
Typically many PsyD programs have "automatic" scholarships that they will give students once they are in the program. And then students can also apply for more once they are in the program.
Did you have extensive research experience when you applied to your PsyD program?
Just a bit! Not a lot, so I choose programs to apply to that gave weight to other things like clinical experience
Hi, so I just graduated with my masters in clinical counseling psychology and am interested in attending Nova’s PsyD program with their neuropsychology track. Do you know whether I would need any experience in that specific area (neuropsychology) in order to be accepted? This is my first time applying for doc programs so I’m not sure how it works or what to expect. Also, do GPAs matter in doc programs? Because I have a 4.0 GPA and was a member of an honors society while I was in grad school. I was also a member of the mental health committee for grad students at my school. Would any of this information matter? Would it enhance my application? I feel like I have a great chance of getting into this school. Just don’t know whether they would accept me for the neuropsychology track. Sorry if what I’m saying doesn’t make sense. I’m still learning about the process. I guess my main question here is, do you have to have experience in the track that you’re interested in or does that not matter.
Great questions! Honestly, most programs understand that prospective students will probably have limited experience regarding neuropsych training unless you got a little bit of that in your masters. I wouldn't worry too much about that, if you have any training as a psychometrician or giving tests/assessments, certainly highlight that! If you can voice your interests in neuropsychology in a personal statement, maybe even shadow a neuropsychologist and get a letter of recommendation from them, and show your interest in the track in the interview you will be competetive, especially with your high gpa. To answer your overall question, it doesn't hurt to have experience in the track your applying to, it will probably help, but its not the end of the world if you don't as long as you communicate clearly in the application process your interest in the track and your motivation for it, maybe even giving a summary in your personal statement about how you can envision yourself as a future neuropsychologist, working with certain populations, etc. If you need any further help crafting a personal statement reach out via my website, philsarpong.com - but hope that helps!
@@philsguidetopsyd thank you so much!!! This was super helpful
I’m thinking of getting a PhD in social work. Do you think that’s a good idea
That depends on a lot of factors like what you'd like to do with the doctorate vs the masters, teaching, research, clinical practice, I believe most people get a PhD in social work mainly for the academic part like research and teaching so if that's something that you're interested in it might be a good fit. Best of luck!
Thanks for sharing 🥰
No problem!
I'm starting school in August for my undergrad in neuroscience and I'm planning to get my PhD after that(in neuro, not psych) I was just curious which classes you found the most challenging. For the first two years I'll be taking mostly gen-eds with the neuro major specific courses coming 3rd and 4th year. Honestly I'm super excited for those, regardless of how hard they are! I have no idea what genetics is going to be like though lol
In my personal experience there were a few hard neuroscience classes, but this also depends on the school, professor, how the class is taught, etc. Intro to neuroscience, stats, and I think I took something else so that I could bypass genetics lol otherwise I actually liked most of my neuroscience classes. Hope that helps!
Wooow, ❤❤❤ i have been questioning seeking and investing a professional path for my personality traits so i thank you God for this golden nugget thru you!! #Grateful
You are so welcome
Hi , Which is country is best for clinical psy D course ?
Depends on what you're looking for, each program even in each country is unique!
Hey. Found you on this side of RUclips. Great comprehensive videos.
Thanks!
I have some doubts I finished my graduation in psychology, what we can do for my master's applied psychology or any other psychology programs can u help
A masters in applied psychology is typically focused on research and not clinical practice. If you're looking to become a sports psychologists masters in general psychology, counseling psychology, kinesology, sports psychology, and then added certification can help. Hope that helps!
I had a bit of a informal life coaching class with some of my friends who got out of prison didn't help them much lot of em died last 3 years
How many years would it take to complete the PsyD program: A) After Bachelors B) After Masters And other than USA, which all countries offer this PsyD program?
psyd program is 4-6 years typically after the bachelors and masters. I'm not exactly sure which other countries might offer the psyd, you might have to check online for that.
Commented on one of your videos about 9 months ago seeking guidance on my Clinical Psych journey. Just wanted to let you know that I got accepted into a fully funded Clinical Psych PhD program and I will start this fall! Thank you for your advice!
This is amazing, congrats!!!! I'm glad thee videos were helpful, best of luck in your journey and thanks for the support!
❤
Phil I couldn't spell your last name sorry. Neuroscience sounds like want but I also would want to be a epileptologist, can this be achieved?
In the U.S. that would be 4 years of med school after the bachelors/undergrad, then a neurology residency, and fellowship and board-certification. Typically neuroscience is a good major to start if you're interested in the med field.
I have a question I am very stuck when it comes to deciding if I want to go another five years for my psy d or if I should go for my masters as a mental health counselor. I have a strong back ground in mental health due to my family having mental illness. What would you recommend.
Here is my take on your circumstance as someone applying for PsyD programs in school psychology. I would say, if you’re not fully committed to a PsyD program, go with the master's program and then see if you want to do the extra schooling afterward. It would be harder to obtain the PsyD after a master's, but it is not impossible. The worst scenario would be you get into a PsyD program but get burnt out after three years and don’t finish. At least with the master, you have two, but you can make a full salary right away-just my thoughts.
Thanks for sharing this question. I think a lot of shadowing, consultation with a psycholgoist is recommended to make sure the psyd is exactly what you're looking for. Since its such a long road you want to be 100% sure that its what you want. The only real difference between the psyd is that they can do other forms of assessment/psychological testing as well as some research and teaching/faculty positions. If you're interested in research as well as assessment it might be for you, but doing the doctorate for the sake of it is not worth it in my opinion since there's a lot of years of school, student loans (it can be expensive) and both psychologists and therapists can do therapy anyways. Those are my thoughts and opinion please be sure to ask around with other professionals! Best of luck!
I know this is out of the topic and may come as like i want to pass a judgment but when speaking of mental health we cannot exclude narcissistic personality disorder which is to some extent prevalent in black people and as far as concerned npd is strong indicator of abuse and historico-psychological trauma that black people have faced. So i think it is good to give some attention on this topic as it would bring greater good. (Sorry for my english and also my intention was not to be judgmental but rather curious of your opinion in general).
That's really interesting! If you could provide some citations or sources/references I'd love to read through that! Thanks for your comment.
Hi from Canada! 🇨🇦 I've been watching your videos and they've helped me a lot to understand the educational system in the US!. I'm thinking of applying for a Doctorate in Psychology in the US. I have a Degree in Psychology and a master in Sexology, a lot of clinical and research experiences. How does the admission process work? Is it hard getting in ? Here in Quebec, it is extremely (if not impossible) hard.. Thanks ! :)
Great question! Usually most schools will detail what they need from students in the application process whether letter of recommendation letters from supervisors, personal statement or essay, clinical and research experience, good gpa/gre scores, and strong interview performance. I believe application deadlines are in the fall and acceptance letters in the spring the following year. Depending on what program you apply to the competition can range with phd programs being more competitive and psyd programs being less competitive. Hope that helps!
